Overview
This Cryptocurrency Paper Wallet Generator is a client-side javascript based software which helps users generate new wallets for over 197 cryptocurrencies.
The software works offline (simply open index.html file on a browser) for users who wish to use it for personal use.
It is a light-weight script which contains only the basics required to generate wallets 100% on the client’s end.
WHAT IS A PAPER WALLET?
Paper wallet is a type of a cryptocurrency wallet which is considered to be the most decentralized & secure. Paper wallets, when generated, provides a public key (address) and a private key. You can then print these information and store it at a safe place. This is also known as ‘cold storage (offline storing)’.
WHY WOULD ANYONE USE A PAPER WALLET?
Cryptocurrency wallet services are after all, centralized. It is vulnerable to hacks and/or unforeseen company circumstances may result in the loss of your funds. It is best to keep your coins with you at all times and one of the best methods recommended is to store is offline (cold storage). There are a few hardware wallets out there which provides this service but to purchase one costs hundreds. Paper wallet is a simple alternative to purchasing hardware wallets.
CAN I USE THIS OFFLINE?
Yes. The script works on your end, wherever you are, even if you are not connected to the internet. IF you are using this script personally, it is recommended that you use it on a computer which will not have access to the internet at all.
HOW DOES IT GENERATE A WALLET ADDRESS? EVEN OFFLINE?
Cryptocurrencies work on ‘blockchain’ which is just a bunch of encrypted computer codes. Generating a new address & private key does not require you to be connected to the internet – simply because your computer understands hashing algorithms. Each coin has its own hashing keys prefixed into their blockchain & by knowing these few information, your computer can generate addresses & private keys which is fully compatible with the coin’s blockchain. When you click ‘generate’ and generate a new address, this is handled by your computer, on your end.
CAN I ADD NEW COINS/DELETE EXISTING COINS?
Yes absolutely. You can add/delete existing coins by tweaking a few lines of code. This is outlined in the ‘readme’ file as you open your .zip files.
